What is Osteopathy?

You’ve probably heard the word before. Perhaps a friend swears by it for their back pain. Your GP may have mentioned it. Or maybe you’ve just been Googling at 11pm trying to figure out why your neck won’t stop aching.
Whatever brought you here, welcome. Let’s break it down.
Osteopathy, Explained Simply
Osteopathy is a hands-on approach to healthcare. It focuses on the relationship between your body’s structure (your muscles, joints, and connective tissues) and how well your body functions as a whole.
Osteopaths are university-trained, government-registered health professionals. In Australia, becoming an osteopath requires a five-year Masters degree and registration with AHPRA (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency). The same body that registers your GP.
It’s not alternative medicine. It’s regulated, evidence-informed healthcare.
The Principles Behind Osteopathy
Osteopathy is guided by a set of core principles that shape the way we think about your body and your health. These aren’t just theory. They inform every assessment and every treatment.
1. The body is a unit.
Your body doesn’t work in isolated parts. Neck pain might be connected to how your thoracic spine moves. A knee issue might be rooted in your hip. Osteopaths look at the whole picture, not just where it hurts.
2. Structure and function are interrelated.
When the structure of your body is compromised through injury, poor posture, stress, or overuse, its ability to function follows. Restoring structure helps restore function.
3. The body has an innate capacity to heal.
Given the right conditions, your body wants to recover. Osteopathic treatment aims to remove the barriers that get in the way of that process.
4. Treatment considers the whole person.
Your physical health doesn’t exist in isolation. Sleep, stress, movement habits, and lifestyle all play a role. Osteopaths take all of this into account.
These principles are what make osteopathy different. It’s not about chasing symptoms. It’s about understanding what’s driving them.
What Does an Osteopath Actually Do?
At your first appointment, we take the time to understand you. Not just your complaint.
We’ll go through your full health history, ask about your lifestyle, and carry out a thorough physical assessment. From there, we’ll develop a picture of what’s going on and why.
Treatment is hands-on. Depending on what you need, this might include:
- Soft tissue massage and myofascial release
- Joint mobilisation and articulation
- Dry needling
- Stretching and movement work
- Rehabilitation guidance and exercise prescription
Every treatment plan is different. Because every person is different.
What Conditions Can Osteopathy Help With?
Osteopaths commonly assist people experiencing:
- Back pain and lower back pain
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Headaches and migraines
- Sporting injuries
- Shoulder, hip, and knee pain
- TMJ (jaw) pain
- Muscle and tendon injuries
- Bursitis
- Arthritic conditions
It’s important to note that osteopathy isn’t a cure-all, and outcomes vary from person to person. What we aim to do is understand what’s contributing to your pain, address it thoughtfully, and give you the tools to manage it long-term.
What to Expect at Frame Osteopathy
At Frame, our approach is Comprehensive, Integrative, Supportive.
Your initial consultation runs for 60 minutes. That’s intentional. We want time to actually listen, to understand your goals, your history, and what’s getting in the way of you feeling your best.
We won’t rush you. There’s no treating where it hurts and sending you on your way. You’ll leave with a clear plan and a real understanding of what’s going on.
We’re also evidence-based. That means our treatments are grounded in current research, not tradition for tradition’s sake. We’re continuously updating our knowledge so you receive the most effective care available.
Do I Need a Referral?
No. You can book directly with an osteopath without seeing your GP first.
If you’re eligible for a Chronic Disease Management Plan through your GP, you may be able to access Medicare rebates for up to five osteopathy sessions per year. Private health insurance rebates are also available. We have a HICAPS facility on-site so you can claim on the spot.
